Author: Keith Grint

Title: Leadership, A very short introduction

Details: Oxford University Press, 2010, 142 pages

As it says in the title, this book is a very short introduction to leadership.

I liked the book; gave some interesting insights into different elements of leadership. It might be a useful book for leaders who want to know more about leadership theories. It is easy to read, will give you all basics you need to know about leadership. You can find further readings at the end of the book if you want to learn more about the different theories.

Keith Grint looks at how leadership has evolved from ancient societies, covering different leadership ideas, such as Plato, Machiavelli. He considers how social, economic, and political forces can undermine particular modes of leadership and discuss the practice of management, how it is evolved through history, how the future looks like, and the influences on all aspects of society.

This book also helps you if you are studying a management qualification or researching leadership in organisations as there are sections around leadership and followership in the book and an extensive reference list at the end of the book with further recommended readings. The book will talk you through the different theories in chronological order, which will help you reference any leadership/management assignments. An excellent little summary for CMI, ILM, and CIPD qualifications as a reference book.

The book challenges your thinking and forces you to reflect on what leadership actually is, but won’t give you ready-made answers on how to lead. If you are looking for a book to provide you with management and leadership tools, this is not the book for you.
